If words were as plain
As the paper they’re written on
It wouldn’t take much
To undo fleeting promises
And unbleed a heart
Scratch it deep
Whitewash
Tear it out
Start over
Fresh sheets
But you know- don’t you
Once they’ve left you
They run unbridled
Up and down the spine
Circuits that trigger
Explosions in the brain
So slow it down
Let the ink drip dry
Don’t bind those words-
From you
To me
No knife would be sharp enough
And then you’d know

Just words.
